Hello! My name is María Eugenia but everybody calls me Taty and I am one of the teachers in charge of what we called “All you need is PAZ”, an exchange program between Vecchioli and Preparatoria Schools from Rafaela, Argentina and Whitney High School from Cerritos, California. This exchange started when the former principal of Vecchioli School, Mrs Laura Ludueña, won a Fullbright scholarship to visit Whitney High School. The following year, the former principal of Whitney, Ms. Patricia Hager, traveled to Argentina to visit Vecchioli School. Both principals realized the importance of starting an exchange where students could have the chance of broadening their horizons and opening their minds by experiencing a complete different culture and speaking a complete different language. They also thought it would be very important to include as many students as possible and so they invited Mrs Paula Leonardi, headteacher of Preparatoria School, to participate in the program. Paula embraced the idea and this is how five public schools more became involved. Now, looking back at those days when the exchange was just a dream and looking at the photo posted on this blog, it is not easy to describe my feelings. I remember when our students, after going through a thorough selection process, began working on different projects to be ready for the USA. Then, our more fluent communication with Ms. Bojorquez and Ms Hidalgo for details… After that, when we all met via skype… Later, when we decided on pairing students… Finally, the day we were all waiting at the bus station, four in the morning, for our American friends to arrive. From that moment on, everything was fast and intense. Day by day, we could see all the students getting closer, more confident… Our students, proud and enthusiastic in showing their friends around. The American students, with their eyes wide open grasping every moment that was given to them. In the meantime, we, the adults (teachers and parents), trying to take advantage of all the chances to talk to our American pairs to learn about our differences and similarities, to reflect upon different aspects of both lifestyles and registering everything with our cameras. It was fun, it was interesting, it was emotional, it was, as I said before, intense. Seeing everybody crying and hugging and repeating “just two months” (to see each other again) gave us a great feeling, our job was done. The belief that these exchanges are once-in-a-life experience, became true and tangible. Now, we are looking forward to living the second part of our experience. We are all getting ready for the States and can’t wait to see the city, the school and the people who, with big hopes and effort, have helped to make this dream come true.
Hola, soy Marianela Mendoza, estudiante de la escuela Vecchioli. Quiero contar un poco mi experiencia. Aquel día cuando llego a mis odios la idea de hacer este intercambio fue una sensación hermosa, como un posible SUEÑO a realizar. Luego de que me hayan dicho que estaba seleccionada para el mismo, aumentaron mis ganas de compartir esta experiencia, de conocer otras culturas, de poder compartir ideas, estilos de vida y otras cosas mas.. Cuando ya sabíamos la fecha de llegada de nuestros compañeros de Estados Unidos fue una intensa y larga espera, pero al fin llegó ese día y estuvimos todos ahí en la estación de autobús cargados de energía, de emoción, de ver cada una de las personas que iban a compartir esta bellísima alegría con nosotros..Para mi fue una experiencia maravillosa, sentí y siento un orgullo inmenso de estar presente en este intercambio, creo que este viaje puede llegar a ser una única posibilidad en mi vida, personalmente fue un gran sacrificio y solo pienso en disfrutarlo, vivirlo , y que al terminar el mismo solo queden recuerdos que cargue toda mi vida, si bien, ya hemos compartido una gran parte, nos queda aun poder visitar aquella hermosa cuidad de la que tanto nos han hablado; el tiempo paso muy rápido y como dijo Taty la despedida nos costo un poco, ahora solo contamos los días para volvernos a ver!
HOLA! Mi nombre es Agustina. Bueno basicamente el intercambio, me sirvió muchisimo, y lo disfruté mucho también ( esta primera parte de la estadia de los chicos de Cerritos en Argentina) para poder aprender muchas cosas que a veces ingonarmos o simplemente no sabemos de otros paises y/o culturas. Pienso que nos abrió mucha la mente, y pudimos hacer nuevas amistades que a pesar de los miles de kilometros que nos separan va a perdurar por mucho tiempo, y con las ganas de que en algun momento nos podamos volver a ver. Bueno por ahora estoy esperando la llegada del 28 de agosto asi podemos volvernos a ver, ya que los extraño mucho! Espero que ellos lo hayan disfrutado tanto como yo disfrute mi estadia con ellos! Un saludo a todos los estudiantes de WHS, y nos estamos viendo en poco tiempo!
Hi! This is Hannah Joo, and I can't believe it's already been 2 weeks since we got back from Argentina. All I can think about are all the friends I've made in Rafaela, and we have been keeping in contact via Skype and Facebook. I really hope this program can continue because I had such an amazing experience living with my host families and honestly wish that more of our students at Whitney can experience everything that being in a foreign country has to offer. I've come to learn just how much your environment can affect you. Not just the physical surroundings but the people around me changed me within the short 2 week stay. Everyone is so open and lively. I remember being swarmed by new people every day at relative's houses or schools. Everyone was so interested in talking to me and asked me sooo many questions, and I couldn't remember half of the people who tried to add me on Facebook because I met wayyy too many people! Anyhow, all the people were so welcoming. I especially loved greeting people with the kiss on the cheek. The whole experience made me want to live more like the way people in Argentina do, mostly in terms of how people treat each other. It felt much less formal and much more personal. Even though I couldn't speak in Spanish fluently, it was so easy to meet new people and talk to strangers for the first time. The way everyone opened up to me helped me get over my nerves and open up as well. Other than the people, the cities of Rafaela and Buenos Aires are BEAUTIFUL! I am so grateful that this program was made possible this year, and I promised myself to visit Rafaela again when I'm older! This exchange was definitely worthwhile and I would recommend it to everyone and anyone who is learning Spanish at Whitney. Being in class gives you the basics of a language, but going to a Spanish speaking country offers so much more knowledge regarding the history and culture behind the language. We all joked that we should have waited to take the AP exam after making the trip. I can't wait for everyone to come to California in August! Looking foward to it...BESOS! :)
Hola! Soy Delfina. La verdad todavía no puedo creer que esté participando de este intercambio... cuando el año pasado nos dijeron que existía la posibilidad me anoté enseguida, era un sueño mas por cumplir. Me encantó compartir nuestra cultura con los chicos de WHS. Ellos se mostraron muy amigables e interesados en aprender y conocer todo lo que hacíamos, nuestras costumbres, tradiciones, las diferencias y las similitudes entre ambos países. Pudimos darles a conocer nuestras actividades diarias, que hacemos en nuestro tiempo libre, el mate, el asado, cocinar empanadas, tortas fritas, mostrarles el dulce de leche, salir al boliche, juntarnos en alguna casa, ir a la escuela, jugar a las cartas, presentar a nuestros amigos y familiares. Espero que al igual que yo, ellos se hayan quedado con un lindo e imborrable recuerdo de esos diez días en Rafaela. Mi familia también lo disfrutó mucho y les encantó vivir la experiencia de tener a una persona de Estados Unidos conviviendo con nosotros. Creo que este intercambio nos permite conocer culturas, abrir la mente para aprender de los demás pero también valorar lo que tenemos y transmitirlo. Espero que se pueda seguir realizando los próximos años para que otros chicos/as puedan disfrutar de esta maravillosa experiencia que, si bien es un gran esfuerzo y sacrificio, vale la pena! Me gustó mucho y fue muy importante vivir esta primer parte y compartir inolvidables momentos con los chicos de WHS, nos hicimos muy buenos amigos! Los extraño mucho y no veo la hora de que llegue el 28 de agosto para ir y conocer su ciudad, costumbres y todo lo que nos van a mostrar! También para perfeccionar el Inglés! Hola, me llamo Daiana Actis. Soy estudiante de la Escuela Preparatoria de Idiomas.Estoy muy agradecida con la posibilidad que me dieron de hacer este intercambio.Realmente es una experiencia que va a perdurar en mi durante toda mi vida. Es algo inexplicable lo que viví en estos poquitos días, pero sin duda fueron los mejores.Este intercambio permite además de estudiar el idioma y ponerlo en práctica, conocer culturas muy diferentes a la que nosotros estamos acostumbrados.Yo estuve esperando con muchas ansias el domingo 19 de junio.Fue muy raro ese momento en donde estábamos todos juntos en la terminal de autobús esperando a los chicos, porque después de tanto tiempo nos encontramos personalmente. Yo creo que el intercambio no va a finalizar cuando nosotros nos volvamos de Cerritos, porque nos vamos a seguir manteniendo en contacto, porque la amistad que logramos hacer va a durar por mucho tiempo, sin importar la distancia y los kilómetros que nos separen.Además estuvo bueno demostrarle y enseñarle todas las costumbres y tradiciones que tenemos en nuestro país, junto con las actividades que hacemos cotidianamente. Espero que los chicos de la WHS se puedan llevar los mejores recuerdos de nosotros como los tenemos de ellos. Y ojalá que este intercambio entre estas dos ciudades se siga haciendo, así más chicos, además de nosotros pueden experimentar esta sensación y esta experiencia que es muy importante para nosotros. Hola somos familia de Fiorella Baronetti que asiste a la preparatoria de idiomas. Estamos muy contentos por esta experiencia de intercambio. Si bien era para los jóvenes, para nosotros, como familia, también fue una experiencia inolvidable. COMPARTIR, APRENDIZAJES, SOCIABILIDAD, LAZOS AFECTIVOS... Después de todo esto nuestra mirada nunca será igual. Experimentamos la alegría de compartir una hija y/o hermana mas, entender otra cultura, aprender a convivir y apreciar esas diferencias. La rutina de la familia se vio renovada y nos permitió descubrir nuevas formas de disfrutar. Pero lo más importante fue la formación de un lazo, de una huella en nuestros corazones para toda la vida. Para mi, Fiorella, fue una experiencia que jamás olvidaré, fueron los diez días mas divertidos y nunca me imagine que iba a aprender tanto. Pero este intercambio no es solo para aprender de otras culturas, también nos permitió conocer a nuevos amigos. Cuando estábamos esperando a los chicos de WHS en la terminal tuve una sensación muy extraña ya que iba a ser la primera vez que me relacionaba con alguien de otro país y que solamente nos habíamos visto por una cámara web. La llegada fue algo sorprendente nunca me hubiera imaginado que iba a vivir una experiencia tan linda. Durante diez días, que pasamos casi todo el día juntas, aprendimos muchas cosas de la otra y llegamos a conocernos muy bien... Cuando llego el día de la partida, todos estábamos muy tristes ya que nos sentíamos como MEJORES AMIGAS, HERMANAS... Espero con ansias viajar a Cerritos para poder reencontrarnos, Me pone muy feliz pensar en volver a vernos... Espero que este intercambio se pueda producir todos los años para que otros jóvenes puedan vivir esta misma experiencia inolvidable, para que puedan aprender cosas nuevas como las que nosotros vivimos y aprendimos.
Hola mi nombre es Josefina Bussana, soy estudiante de la escuela Mario R. Vecchioli y también asisto a la preparatoria de idiomas. Quería comentar que mi experiencia aunque no esté completa aun ya que viajaremos a los Estados Unidos en agosto, es increíble, nunca pensé que sería tan satisfactoria tanto para mí como para mi familia, conocer una nueva cultura e interactuar activamente con ella. Este intercambio sirvió mucho para poner en práctica y desarrollar los conocimientos que poseo del inglés. Por otro lado, hoy en día tengo asombrosos amigos que a pesar de la distancia nos mantenemos en contacto continuamente. Estoy feliz de haberme involucrado en este proyecto que surgió como una pequeña idea, y hoy es una realidad. Espero con ansias que este intercambio sea el puntapié inicial para que esto siga adelante y muchos chicos puedan experimentar la satisfacción que ha producido en mí. Desde ya, estoy plenamente agradecida para con los profesores, que pusieron tanto esfuerzo y dedicación para convertir en un hecho este anhelo de unir dos culturas, pero como así también a mis compañeros que se han comprometido con el proyecto y hemos logrado cumplir nuestros sueños. ¡¡Besos y cariños para todos!!
Mi nombre es Agostina Haspert, soy estudiante del colegio Mario R. Vecchioli. Quiero compartir mi experiencia con ustedes porque esta primera parte la disfrute mucho,fue emocionante vernos todos esperando su llegada creo que todos teníamos muchos sentimientos juntos era una mezcla de felicidad, ansias, nervios. Nos permitió conocer y convivir con otra cultura diferente a la nuestra, pero me emociona mucho mas escucharnos hablar a futuro planeando reencontrarnos nuevamente en unos años y que el contacto nunca se pierda. ESPERO QUE LO HAYAN DISFRUTADO TANTO COMO YO. Espero muy ansiosa el 28 de Agosto para nuestro reencuentro :) un beso a todos, nos vemos pronto!
Hola, soy Daniela Saucedo la hospedadora de Michelle Arechiga. Para comenzar puedo clasificar esta experiencia como INCREÍBLE. Todavía hoy no puedo creer que todo lo que esta ocurriendo sea realidad. Desde el primer día de actividades y reuniones, era notable la emoción y la alegría que teníamos. Todavía hoy recuerdo como esperábamos expectantes y muy nerviosos la llegada de los chicos en la terminal. A pesar de ser las cuatro de la madrugada estábamos todos atentos, viendo hacia la ruta, deseando ver el tan ansiado colectivo. Me encantó el echo que los alumnos y profesores visitantes eran muy amigables y muy abiertos de mente. Se lograron adaptar perfectamente a nuestro estilo de vida sin mayores complicaciones. En resumen el encuentro fue hermoso, la estadía fue genial y la despedida muy triste. Las lágrimas no pasaron desapercibidas. Aun así, la idea de volvernos a ver nos llena de felicidad y esperanza. Debo decir que a toda mi familia le agradó Michelle, todos la pasamos bien y nos divertimos muchísimo. No puedo esperar a volverla a ver!
We finally went to Rafaela, Argentina!!! It’s been two weeks and I still can’t believe how beneficial it for us all. Every Whitney student should have the opportunity to have an experience. It was great to hear how our Whitney students spoke Spanish; a language once foreign to them. That in itself was incredible and to hear them sing in Spanish and immerse themselves in the culture. It was incredible seeing all those parents and teachers waiting for us in Rafaela at 4am. They had big banners welcoming us and they were happy to finally meet us. It was phenomenal. We quickly greeted everyone and our students met with each of their families and went home. The next day was Father’s Day and I spent it with Paula Leonardi and her family in Rafaela at her parent’s house. Each day was an adventure. We went to a different school and had different activities, with our host families and the students from Whitney and Argentina. We did City Tours, visited at ILOLAY, dairy factory; MAHLE, valve factory; we went to the Preparatoria, Mario Vecchioli School and others. We walked around in Rafaela as though we were part of the community and belonged. We took part in celebrating Birthdays with our hosts. We became part of the family in a matter of two weeks. We all connected with them and we now have families in Argentina. The short time we spent in Argentina gave us memories that will definitely last a lifetime. While we were traveling to and back, from this foreign country, our students transformed from insecure adolescents to mature open-minded pre-adults. They tried everything from different foods, dancing, local customs and meeting new people. They grew right before my eyes. I was so proud of them. Our students lived with their new families and got along well both with them. Wildcats are such good students. Every day that I saw them they transformed more and more into these great human beings and I am proud to know them.
Hola me llamo Julieta Botali y soy alumna de la preparatoria de idiomas. Siempre tuve ganas de hacer un intercambio y me encanto la idea cuando me entere de este proyecto. Esperé emocionada la venida de los chicos a Rafaela y estoy muy agradecida por la buena predisposición de todos, en especial de los profesores que hicieron posible este intercambio. Me puse triste en el momento en que los chicos se fueron, porque sentí que todo se estaba pasando muy rápido, me hubiera gustado pasar mas días con ellos. Se formo una amistad re linda, y con mas razón es por lo que ahora estoy mas ansiosa de ir para allá! No veo la hora de que sea fines de Agosto! Pero no quiero que pase rápido tampoco!! Espero poder aprovecharlo y disfrutarlo al máximo como hasta ahora. Con respecto a mi familia, también fue muy enriquecedor y una linda experiencia. Requirió de cambios y tratar de adaptarse a tener otra persona viviendo en nuestra casa, pero todos se encariñaron muy rápido con Amrita y les gusto muchísimo poder ser parte también te esto. Hola!! Soy Ma. Eugenia, mamá de Gastón Ardusso. En nuestra familia somos seis integrantes y cuando supimos que íbamos a alojar a un estudiante de WHS comenzamos a prepararnos para ello. Estábamos muy preocupados por cómo se iba a sentir pero cuando conocimos a Vince supimos que eso ya no debía ser una preocupación porque tuvo la mejor predisposición para "acomodarse" a nuestra rutina. El intercambio resultó una experiencia maravillosa, no sólo para Gastón, que es quien va a viajar a Cerritos, sino para toda la familia porque compartimos unos días muy especiales. Conocer otra cultura y dar a conocer la nuestra creo que es lo más enriquecedor de esta experiencia, lo que jamás olvidaremos.
Hola mi nombre es Florencia Calvo, tengo 17 años y soy parte de este intercambio gracias a la escuela Preparatoria de Idiomas. Junto con Josefina Bussana, alojamos a Marissa Fierro. Este intercambio es una experiencia única e inolvidable para todos, a partir del cual aprendimos mucho e hicimos muchos amigos! Aprendí mucho de su cultura y costumbres, no solo yo, sino que mi familia también aprovecho la oportunidad para aprender un poco mas. Además toda la familia se encariñó mucho con Marissa y creamos un vínculo muy lindo que esperamos que perdure. Pero este intercambio no terminó, ahora nos toca a nosotros visitar los Estados Unidos! Estamos muy ansiosos por ir y reencontrarnos con los chicos nuevamente! Quiero agradecerle a todas las profesoras y familias que hicieron posible este intercambio inolvidable!
Hello! My name is Fion and I was Noel's partner. Staying in Argentina for those two weeks was really life changing and amazing. Visiting a foreign country is one thing, but actually living there and experiencing the life is a whole new memory. I've been to school with the exchange partners, toured Rafaela, had breakfast, lunch, and dinner with the family everyday, and done so many things that have really opened my eyes to the lives of other people. Life in Rafaela has many similarities and differences in comparison to life in Cerritos. There is so much more freedom and the large city leaves so much room for adventure and fun. In these short two weeks, all of us have been able to form a close bond with our exchange partners like we never thought would be possible. I really appreciated the hospitality and kindness of the exchange students and parents alike. They embraced us with open arms into their homes and treated us as if we were their own. The two weeks just flew by and by the time we were leaving, crying was inevitable. We arrived with mixed emotions of fear and anxiety and left with a homesickness that will always be in our hearts. I LOVE RAFAELA!
Hi! This is Karen Cheng, and my Argentinian partners were Agostina Haspert and Fiorella Baronetti. This was an opportunity of a lifetime, and I am very glad that I took it. Argentina was a whole different world in some ways, and yet there were little things that were the same as here. Something that was pleasantly different was that nobody was a stranger there- as soon as you met them, they counted you as a friend. Something that didn't change- the teenagers there are just as devoted to facebook as we are. This was an experience that I will remember for the rest of my life. The families were amazing- they took me in as one of their own. I think almost everyone, if not everyone, cried when the time came to leave the family. We all developed close bonds with the Argentinians within those few days. I had no idea what to expect before the trip, but I would've never thought that it would be as amazing as it was. It's expanded my view of the world outside of Cerritos, California. I got a firsthand look of life in a different country. Argentina gave me more than I could've imagined-an experience that I'll always keep with me, an extended family, and a second home.
It only took two weeks for me to be greatly impacted by a new group of people. Hi my name is Johanna Paz and I enjoyed the exchange program very much and it will be a great experience if future generations can make this trip as well because although it may be hard to believe it was life changing. The thing that I liked the most was that the people were very welcoming and the students took us into their family as if we’ve known each other for years ! That was great because it made me feel like part of the family and I think it is safe to say that I am part of the Actis family. It felt great to be surrounded by a new culture that is very warm compared to the people in the USA that only great with a “hi” or “hello” and the closest thing to a welcoming kiss is a handshake. Being away from home for two weeks also made me appreciate what I have back home because we Americans have a lot more commodities than people in Latin American countries. It was great seeing that their happiness did not come from video games, but from family and hanging out with their friends and being active in sports. Now that I have experienced a new culture in a foreign country it is fun to compare and contrast. When we visited the schools in Argentina all the students were very welcoming throwing millions of questions at us and crowding around us. They made sure that we didn’t feel like strangers. The fact that the Argentinians were so open and warm it not only made me feel welcomed, but it made me be more open as well. I hope that WHS students give them the same attention as the Argentinian students gave us. When I got home I had about 60 friend requests, and of course they were all from Rafaela. It is great that Facebook and skype exist so that we can keep communicating with our friends from Argentina. I promised myself that I will go back to Rafaela if it were the last thing I did. I met new people that are great and I know that when I go back I will have a family waiting for me with open doors. This is a once in a lifetime experience because it expands the view one has of their world. It is an experience that made many memories and will live on in my heart. Saying goodbye was definitely the hardest thing to do because we all grew so close in such a short amount of time, but I am waiting with open arms for the Argentinians to come to California !
Hace 30 años, siendo aún una estudiante, tuve la oportunidad de viajar a California para dar el puntapié inicial a un intercambio entre una universidad los EEUU y la universidad argentina donde estudiaba mi carrera docente. Esa experiencia definitivamente cambió mi vida y mi forma de ver el mundo y contribuyó para que asumiera un compromiso renovado con mi crecimiento personal y profesional. Hoy, como profesora de inglés, tengo la posibilidad de ser parte de este maravilloso proyecto, anhelado durante muchos años y construido con pasión y esfuerzo por estas 3 instituciones públicas. Hemos trabajado mucho para lograr que este sueño se haga realidad, pero lo hemos logrado. Nuestros alumnos se han convertido en verdaderos embajadores de su país, dignos representantes vivos de su cultura. Aprender el idioma, compartir actividades y ambientes les ha permitido destruir mitos, prejuicios y toda forma de discriminación para construir relaciones sociales y una cultura de paz. Este intercambio ha transformado y seguirá transformando sus vidas. Ver a los chicos argentinos y americanos despedirse fundidos en un solo abrazo, con lágrimas en los ojos fue un momento realmente conmovedor, y fue la prueba de que habíamos logrado nuestro objetivo. El grupo americano ha dejado huellas en todos nosotros. Taty y yo creemos que para nuestros chicos, los EEUU ya no es un país del norte, para cada uno de nosotros los EEUU son Fion, Karen, Carin, Sagar, Vince, Michelle, Javier, Griselda, María, Amrita, Marissa, Hannah, Dianna, y Johanna. Son nuestra familia.
30 years ago, still being a student, I had the opportunity of travelling to California to start an exchange program between a university in the States and the Argentine university where I was studying to become a teacher. That experience definitely changed my life and my view of the world, and helped me make a renewed commitment with my personal and professional growth. Today, as an English Teacher, I have the possibility of being part of this wonderful project, longed for many years and built with passion and effort by these 3 public institutions. We have worked a lot to make this dream come true, but we’ve made it. Our students have become true ambassadors of their own countries, worthy and live representatives of their cultures. Learning the language, sharing activities and environments have made it possible for them to destroy myths, prejudices and any form of discrimination, and to build up social interrelations and a culture of peace. This exchange has transformed and will continue transforming their lives. Watching American and Argentine students saying goodbye at the bus station, melting into each other’s arms, with tears in their eyes, was a really touching moment, and proved that we had achieved our goal. The American group has left a trace in all of us. Taty and I believe that for our students, the USA is no longer a country in the North, for each of us the States are Fion, Karen, Carin, Sagar, Vince, Michelle, Javier, Griselda, María, Amrita, Marissa, Hannah, Dianna, and Johanna. They are family.
Mi nombre es Julián, tengo 17 años y voy a la Escuela Preparatoria de Inglés. Me encantó la experiencia de alojar a Sagar en mi casa y poder mostrarle mi familia, amigos, escuela y actividades, a él como al resto, en tan solo 10 días. Ésto fue más fácil ya que ellos vinieron con tanta predisposición y alegría que nos permitió enseguida sentirnos como amigos. El idioma no fue ningún problema. Tanta espera y tantos preparativos por fin llegaron. Yo estoy contando los días que faltan para volver a vernos, pero esta vez serán ellos quienes nos reciban pero va hacer igual o mas maravilloso de lo que ya pasamos juntos. Un saludo, nos vemos dentro de poco!!!!

La experiencia para mí fue una de las mejores que viví en mi vida, debido a que en tan poco tiempo pude llegar a conocer no solo a chicos con diferentes culturas y orígenes sino que me llegué a encariñar con muchos de ellos, también me permitió poder afianzar el idioma y conocerlo mejor. Estoy muy contenta y agradecida por tener esta gran oportunidad y no veo la hora de viajar para EE.UU y poder reencontrarme con todos Uds. Saludos y nos vemos pronto!!
Hi, this is Marissa Fierro, and it's so hard to believe that I went to Argentina over a month ago. I was honestly really scared to arrive, because I had not talked to Flo and Jose that much beforehand, the two girls that I stayed with. But right when I got off the bus, they both came up to me and hugged me and gave me a kiss on the cheek-one of my favorite parts of the culture-as if we were already good friends. Over the ten days that I was there, I learned so much about the culture and beliefs of the girls that I stayed with and of their families. We had so much fun comparing customs here and in Rafaela. One thing that I especially loved was the relationships that I built with Flo's and Jose's families. Communication was hardly an issue because everyone was understanding of my lack of complete fluency in the language, and every night at dinner we would spend so much time sitting there after we ate, just talking about the most random things. Meeting their friends from school, and the other students that were part of the exchange, was so fun because they all greeted us so warmly, wanting to know the most obscure things about my life. I never felt awkward or uncomfortable even though I had never met any of these people before. Leaving was the absolute worst part. I dont think any of us expected to be so sad to leave, but I know that we all had tears in our eyes as we got onto the bus and left. I think this was one of the hardest goodbyes I've made, even though I only knew everyone for two weeks, which surprised me so much. But, seeing the families for the last time, seeing everyone hugging goodbye, and having to say goodbye to Flo and Jose was so hard. The only thing that kept us happy was the thought that we'd be seeing them again at the end of the summer. So, I cannot wait until the 28th, when I can show them how I live and what this area is like.
Honestly, I can talk about what I did there, what I learned about the culture, and the people I met, but none of it would do the experience justice. The exchange was truly a once in a lifetime opportunity, and I would do it again in a second. I definitely want to go back to Argentina, and I know I will stay friends with the people I met there throughout my life. I grew to appreciate life here a lot more, but also to take notice of the simpler ways of life which most people have in Rafaela, which I actually like a lot more. I hope that other students in the future get to take part in the same exchange program, because it is so amazing. :)

Lo que me gusto de este intercambio ?? mmm TODO , ya que nosotros tuvimos la oportunidad de enseñarles sobre algunas de nuestras costumbres, ya que los chico estaban dispuestos a aprender. Realizamos diferentes actividades en las cuales participamos todos, junto con los profesores. Hola soy Noel Vogt estudiante de la escuela secundario Mario R. Vechiolli. Me gustaría destacar lo importante que fue para mi este intercambio y los momentos tan lindos que viví, fue una experiencia increíble que la verdad jamas pensé que me hiba a pasar. Todos los chicos norteamericanos se portaron muy bien y se integraron rápidamente al grupo lo cual me sorprendió porque pensé que hiba a ser un poco mas difícil, estoy muy contenta de que la hallan pasado genial como nos dijeron. En el momento en que se fueron me causo un poco de tristeza y alegría a la ves, tristeza por que se hiban y no los hiba a ver en mucho tiempo y por supuesto los hiba a extrañar, ya me había acostumbrado a su presencia. Y alegría a la vez porque estaba muy cerca de ir para allá y al ver ese colectivo tenia muchas ganas de irme con ellos. Estoy muy agradecida por hacerme parte de este proyecto sobre todo a las profesoras que pusieron todas sus ganas y compromiso en esto y gracias a dios salio todo bien. Estoy contando los días para ir a los Estados Unidos pienso que la voy a pasar genial!! un beso grande a todos y saludos!!
Hola, soy Micaela Thimelthaler, en cuanto a mi experiencia creo que fue muy buena, es inexplicable lo que se siente al estar con ellos, y la inmensa felicidad que ocaciona ser parte de un intercambio así. Las personas que lo componen, tanto profesores como alumnos estadounidenses y argentinos son excelentes personas dispuestas a ayudarnos a cumplir este sueño de conocer otra parte del mundo. Mi familia disfrutó mucho la presencia de Carin, es una muy buena chica y siempre estuvo dispuesta a conocer todo lo que hacía refenrencia a nuestras vidas, actividades, comidas, y muchas cosas que fueron muy especiales al haberlas podido compartir con ella y con todos los demás chicos. Hey there, this is Carin Chin. I just realized I never posted my post-Argentina experience due to being out-of-town so here goes:
When I arrived in Rafaela, Argentina at 4AM after a long flight and bus ride, I wasn't sure what to expect from the next two weeks and was actually quite nervous. I mean, studying Spanish for two years gives you enough knowledge to make general conversation, but enough to actually connect and befriend people? Not sure about that. Luckily, it was. In the beginning, pointing and exaggerated hand motions were key to survival but soon I became more comfortable with my limited Spanish and was able to talk more or less normally with my new Argentinian (or is it Argentine?) buddies even though half the time I had absolutely no idea what was going on. I also had the very fortunate privilege to learn how to play the game of Truco, a complicated, popular card game in Argentina, and soon gained a mini-reputation of being a good, or just plain lucky, player (and liar ;D). Watching Phineas and Ferb in Spanish was also quite an experience in itself. I loved the laid-back atmosphere in Rafaela, strikingly different from the busy city at home. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE in Rafaela seemed so excited and happy to see us, it was like the relationship between Justin Bieber and his millions of fan girls. All of us began to receive Facebook request after request as we assimilated into this strange, new, but comfortable environment. I really enjoyed experiencing the different customs of Argentina, especially the greetings. Where else in the world do people exchange kisses on the cheek when they first meet other people? It was startling, but amazing. And of course, the whole country was crazy about soccer! Yay!
This was truly a wonderful experience despite the freezing cold temperatures in the month of June(!) and the enormous amount of weight I put on thanks to all of the delicious Argentine delicacies (world's best churros!). I made new friends, discovered new places, was on Rafaela TV - the list goes on and on. I am so thankful to have been able to participate in such a trip and look forward to traveling/studying abroad again one day.

Hello! My name is María Eugenia but everybody calls me Taty and I am one of the teachers in charge of what we called “All you need is PAZ”, an exchange program between Vecchioli and Preparatoria Schools from Rafaela, Argentina and Whitney High School from Cerritos, California.
ReplyDeleteThis exchange started when the former principal of Vecchioli School, Mrs Laura Ludueña, won a Fullbright scholarship to visit Whitney High School. The following year, the former principal of Whitney, Ms. Patricia Hager, traveled to Argentina to visit Vecchioli School. Both principals realized the importance of starting an exchange where students could have the chance of broadening their horizons and opening their minds by experiencing a complete different culture and speaking a complete different language. They also thought it would be very important to include as many students as possible and so they invited Mrs Paula Leonardi, headteacher of Preparatoria School, to participate in the program. Paula embraced the idea and this is how five public schools more became involved.
Now, looking back at those days when the exchange was just a dream and looking at the photo posted on this blog, it is not easy to describe my feelings. I remember when our students, after going through a thorough selection process, began working on different projects to be ready for the USA. Then, our more fluent communication with Ms. Bojorquez and Ms Hidalgo for details… After that, when we all met via skype… Later, when we decided on pairing students… Finally, the day we were all waiting at the bus station, four in the morning, for our American friends to arrive. From that moment on, everything was fast and intense. Day by day, we could see all the students getting closer, more confident… Our students, proud and enthusiastic in showing their friends around. The American students, with their eyes wide open grasping every moment that was given to them. In the meantime, we, the adults (teachers and parents), trying to take advantage of all the chances to talk to our American pairs to learn about our differences and similarities, to reflect upon different aspects of both lifestyles and registering everything with our cameras.
It was fun, it was interesting, it was emotional, it was, as I said before, intense. Seeing everybody crying and hugging and repeating “just two months” (to see each other again) gave us a great feeling, our job was done. The belief that these exchanges are once-in-a-life experience, became true and tangible.
Now, we are looking forward to living the second part of our experience. We are all getting ready for the States and can’t wait to see the city, the school and the people who, with big hopes and effort, have helped to make this dream come true.
Hola, soy Marianela Mendoza, estudiante de la escuela Vecchioli. Quiero contar un poco mi experiencia. Aquel día cuando llego a mis odios la idea de hacer este intercambio fue una sensación hermosa, como un posible SUEÑO a realizar. Luego de que me hayan dicho que estaba seleccionada para el mismo, aumentaron mis ganas de compartir esta experiencia, de conocer otras culturas, de poder compartir ideas, estilos de vida y otras cosas mas.. Cuando ya sabíamos la fecha de llegada de nuestros compañeros de Estados Unidos fue una intensa y larga espera, pero al fin llegó ese día y estuvimos todos ahí en la estación de autobús cargados de energía, de emoción, de ver cada una de las personas que iban a compartir esta bellísima alegría con nosotros..Para mi fue una experiencia maravillosa, sentí y siento un orgullo inmenso de estar presente en este intercambio, creo que este viaje puede llegar a ser una única posibilidad en mi vida, personalmente fue un gran sacrificio y solo pienso en disfrutarlo, vivirlo , y que al terminar el mismo solo queden recuerdos que cargue toda mi vida, si bien, ya hemos compartido una gran parte, nos queda aun poder visitar aquella hermosa cuidad de la que tanto nos han hablado; el tiempo paso muy rápido y como dijo Taty la despedida nos costo un poco, ahora solo contamos los días para volvernos a ver!

Bueno basicamente el intercambio, me sirvió muchisimo, y lo disfruté mucho también ( esta primera parte de la estadia de los chicos de Cerritos en Argentina) para poder aprender muchas cosas que a veces ingonarmos o simplemente no sabemos de otros paises y/o culturas. Pienso que nos abrió mucha la mente, y pudimos hacer nuevas amistades que a pesar de los miles de kilometros que nos separan va a perdurar por mucho tiempo, y con las ganas de que en algun momento nos podamos volver a ver. Bueno por ahora estoy esperando la llegada del 28 de agosto asi podemos volvernos a ver, ya que los extraño mucho! Espero que ellos lo hayan disfrutado tanto como yo disfrute mi estadia con ellos! Un saludo a todos los estudiantes de WHS, y nos estamos viendo en poco tiempo!
ReplyDeleteHi! This is Hannah Joo, and I can't believe it's already been 2 weeks since we got back from Argentina. All I can think about are all the friends I've made in Rafaela, and we have been keeping in contact via Skype and Facebook. I really hope this program can continue because I had such an amazing experience living with my host families and honestly wish that more of our students at Whitney can experience everything that being in a foreign country has to offer.
ReplyDeleteI've come to learn just how much your environment can affect you. Not just the physical surroundings but the people around me changed me within the short 2 week stay. Everyone is so open and lively. I remember being swarmed by new people every day at relative's houses or schools. Everyone was so interested in talking to me and asked me sooo many questions, and I couldn't remember half of the people who tried to add me on Facebook because I met wayyy too many people! Anyhow, all the people were so welcoming. I especially loved greeting people with the kiss on the cheek. The whole experience made me want to live more like the way people in Argentina do, mostly in terms of how people treat each other. It felt much less formal and much more personal. Even though I couldn't speak in Spanish fluently, it was so easy to meet new people and talk to strangers for the first time. The way everyone opened up to me helped me get over my nerves and open up as well.
Other than the people, the cities of Rafaela and Buenos Aires are BEAUTIFUL! I am so grateful that this program was made possible this year, and I promised myself to visit Rafaela again when I'm older! This exchange was definitely worthwhile and I would recommend it to everyone and anyone who is learning Spanish at Whitney. Being in class gives you the basics of a language, but going to a Spanish speaking country offers so much more knowledge regarding the history and culture behind the language. We all joked that we should have waited to take the AP exam after making the trip.
I can't wait for everyone to come to California in August! Looking foward to it...BESOS! :)
Hola! Soy Delfina. La verdad todavía no puedo creer que esté participando de este intercambio... cuando el año pasado nos dijeron que existía la posibilidad me anoté enseguida, era un sueño mas por cumplir.
ReplyDeleteMe encantó compartir nuestra cultura con los chicos de WHS. Ellos se mostraron muy amigables e interesados en aprender y conocer todo lo que hacíamos, nuestras costumbres, tradiciones, las diferencias y las similitudes entre ambos países. Pudimos darles a conocer nuestras actividades diarias, que hacemos en nuestro tiempo libre, el mate, el asado, cocinar empanadas, tortas fritas, mostrarles el dulce de leche, salir al boliche, juntarnos en alguna casa, ir a la escuela, jugar a las cartas, presentar a nuestros amigos y familiares.
Espero que al igual que yo, ellos se hayan quedado con un lindo e imborrable recuerdo de esos diez días en Rafaela. Mi familia también lo disfrutó mucho y les encantó vivir la experiencia de tener a una persona de Estados Unidos conviviendo con nosotros.
Creo que este intercambio nos permite conocer culturas, abrir la mente para aprender de los demás pero también valorar lo que tenemos y transmitirlo. Espero que se pueda seguir realizando los próximos años para que otros chicos/as puedan disfrutar de esta maravillosa experiencia que, si bien es un gran esfuerzo y sacrificio, vale la pena!
Me gustó mucho y fue muy importante vivir esta primer parte y compartir inolvidables momentos con los chicos de WHS, nos hicimos muy buenos amigos! Hola, me llamo Daiana Actis. Soy estudiante de la Escuela Preparatoria de Idiomas.Estoy muy agradecida con la posibilidad que me dieron de hacer este intercambio.Realmente es una experiencia que va a perdurar en mi durante toda mi vida. Es algo inexplicable lo que viví en estos poquitos días, pero sin duda fueron los mejores.Este intercambio permite además de estudiar el idioma y ponerlo en práctica, conocer culturas muy diferentes a la que nosotros estamos acostumbrados.Yo estuve esperando con muchas ansias el domingo 19 de junio.Fue muy raro ese momento en donde estábamos todos juntos en la terminal de autobús esperando a los chicos, porque después de tanto tiempo nos encontramos personalmente. Yo creo que el intercambio no va a finalizar cuando nosotros nos volvamos de Cerritos, porque nos vamos a seguir manteniendo en contacto, porque la amistad que logramos hacer va a durar por mucho tiempo, sin importar la distancia y los kilómetros que nos separen.Además estuvo bueno demostrarle y enseñarle todas las costumbres y tradiciones que tenemos en nuestro país, junto con las actividades que hacemos cotidianamente. Espero que los chicos de la WHS se puedan llevar los mejores recuerdos de nosotros como los tenemos de ellos. Y ojalá que este intercambio entre estas dos ciudades se siga haciendo, así más chicos, además de nosotros pueden experimentar esta sensación y esta experiencia que es muy importante para nosotros. ReplyDeleteHola somos familia de Fiorella Baronetti que asiste a la preparatoria de idiomas. Estamos muy contentos por esta experiencia de intercambio. Si bien era para los jóvenes, para nosotros, como familia, también fue una experiencia inolvidable.
ReplyDeleteCOMPARTIR, APRENDIZAJES, SOCIABILIDAD, LAZOS AFECTIVOS... Después de todo esto nuestra mirada nunca será igual. Experimentamos la alegría de compartir una hija y/o hermana mas, entender otra cultura, aprender a convivir y apreciar esas diferencias.
La rutina de la familia se vio renovada y nos permitió descubrir nuevas formas de disfrutar. Pero lo más importante fue la formación de un lazo, de una huella en nuestros corazones para toda la vida.
Para mi, Fiorella, fue una experiencia que jamás olvidaré, fueron los diez días mas divertidos y nunca me imagine que iba a aprender tanto. Pero este intercambio no es solo para aprender de otras culturas, también nos permitió conocer a nuevos amigos.
Cuando estábamos esperando a los chicos de WHS en la terminal tuve una sensación muy extraña ya que iba a ser la primera vez que me relacionaba con alguien de otro país y que solamente nos habíamos visto por una cámara web. La llegada fue algo sorprendente nunca me hubiera imaginado que iba a vivir una experiencia tan linda. Durante diez días, que pasamos casi todo el día juntas, aprendimos muchas cosas de la otra y llegamos a conocernos muy bien... Cuando llego el día de la partida, todos estábamos muy tristes ya que nos sentíamos como MEJORES AMIGAS, HERMANAS...
Espero con ansias viajar a Cerritos para poder reencontrarnos, Me pone muy feliz pensar en volver a vernos...
Espero que este intercambio se pueda producir todos los años para que otros jóvenes puedan vivir esta misma experiencia inolvidable, para que puedan aprender cosas nuevas como las que nosotros vivimos y aprendimos.
Hola mi nombre es Josefina Bussana, soy estudiante de la escuela Mario R. Vecchioli y también asisto a la preparatoria de idiomas. Quería comentar que mi experiencia aunque no esté completa aun ya que viajaremos a los Estados Unidos en agosto, es increíble, nunca pensé que sería tan satisfactoria tanto para mí como para mi familia, conocer una nueva cultura e interactuar activamente con ella. Este intercambio sirvió mucho para poner en práctica y desarrollar los conocimientos que poseo del inglés. Por otro lado, hoy en día tengo asombrosos amigos que a pesar de la distancia nos mantenemos en contacto continuamente. Estoy feliz de haberme involucrado en este proyecto que surgió como una pequeña idea, y hoy es una realidad.

Nos permitió conocer y convivir con otra cultura diferente a la nuestra, pero me emociona mucho mas escucharnos hablar a futuro planeando reencontrarnos nuevamente en unos años y que el contacto nunca se pierda. Hola, soy Daniela Saucedo la hospedadora de Michelle Arechiga. Para comenzar puedo clasificar esta experiencia como INCREÍBLE. Todavía hoy no puedo creer que todo lo que esta ocurriendo sea realidad.
ReplyDeleteDesde el primer día de actividades y reuniones, era notable la emoción y la alegría que teníamos. Todavía hoy recuerdo como esperábamos expectantes y muy nerviosos la llegada de los chicos en la terminal. A pesar de ser las cuatro de la madrugada estábamos todos atentos, viendo hacia la ruta, deseando ver el tan ansiado colectivo. Me encantó el echo que los alumnos y profesores visitantes eran muy amigables y muy abiertos de mente. Se lograron adaptar perfectamente a nuestro estilo de vida sin mayores complicaciones.
En resumen el encuentro fue hermoso, la estadía fue genial y la despedida muy triste. Las lágrimas no pasaron desapercibidas. Aun así, la idea de volvernos a ver nos llena de felicidad y esperanza.
Debo decir que a toda mi familia le agradó Michelle, todos la pasamos bien y nos divertimos muchísimo. No puedo esperar a volverla a ver!
We finally went to Rafaela, Argentina!!! It’s been two weeks and I still can’t believe how beneficial it for us all. Every Whitney student should have the opportunity to have an experience. It was great to hear how our Whitney students spoke Spanish; a language once foreign to them. That in itself was incredible and to hear them sing in Spanish and immerse themselves in the culture. It was incredible seeing all those parents and teachers waiting for us in Rafaela at 4am. They had big banners welcoming us and they were happy to finally meet us. It was phenomenal. We quickly greeted everyone and our students met with each of their families and went home. The next day was Father’s Day and I spent it with Paula Leonardi and her family in Rafaela at her parent’s house. Each day was an adventure. We went to a different school and had different activities, with our host families and the students from Whitney and Argentina.
ReplyDeleteWe did City Tours, visited at ILOLAY, dairy factory; MAHLE, valve factory; we went to the Preparatoria, Mario Vecchioli School and others. We walked around in Rafaela as though we were part of the community and belonged. We took part in celebrating Birthdays with our hosts. We became part of the family in a matter of two weeks. We all connected with them and we now have families in Argentina. The short time we spent in Argentina gave us memories that will definitely last a lifetime.
While we were traveling to and back, from this foreign country, our students transformed from insecure adolescents to mature open-minded pre-adults. They tried everything from different foods, dancing, local customs and meeting new people. They grew right before my eyes. I was so proud of them. Our students lived with their new families and got along well both with them. Wildcats are such good students. Every day that I saw them they transformed more and more into these great human beings and I am proud to know them.
Hola me llamo Julieta Botali y soy alumna de la preparatoria de idiomas. Siempre tuve ganas de hacer un intercambio y me encanto la idea cuando me entere de este proyecto. Esperé emocionada la venida de los chicos a Rafaela y estoy muy agradecida por la buena predisposición de todos, en especial de los profesores que hicieron posible este intercambio. Me puse triste en el momento en que los chicos se fueron, porque sentí que todo se estaba pasando muy rápido, me hubiera gustado pasar mas días con ellos. Se formo una amistad re linda, y con mas razón es por lo que ahora estoy mas ansiosa de ir para allá! No veo la hora de que sea fines de Agosto! Pero no quiero que pase rápido tampoco!! Espero poder aprovecharlo y disfrutarlo al máximo como hasta ahora. Con respecto a mi familia, también fue muy enriquecedor y una linda experiencia. Requirió de cambios y tratar de adaptarse a tener otra persona viviendo en nuestra casa, pero todos se encariñaron muy rápido con Amrita y les gusto muchísimo poder ser parte también te esto. ReplyDeleteHola!! Soy Ma. Eugenia, mamá de Gastón Ardusso. En nuestra familia somos seis integrantes y cuando supimos que íbamos a alojar a un estudiante de WHS comenzamos a prepararnos para ello. Estábamos muy preocupados por cómo se iba a sentir pero cuando conocimos a Vince supimos que eso ya no debía ser una preocupación porque tuvo la mejor predisposición para "acomodarse" a nuestra rutina.
ReplyDeleteEl intercambio resultó una experiencia maravillosa, no sólo para Gastón, que es quien va a viajar a Cerritos, sino para toda la familia porque compartimos unos días muy especiales. Conocer otra cultura y dar a conocer la nuestra creo que es lo más enriquecedor de esta experiencia, lo que jamás olvidaremos.

Además toda la familia se encariñó mucho con Marissa y creamos un vínculo muy lindo que esperamos que perdure.
Pero este intercambio no terminó, ahora nos toca a nosotros visitar los Estados Unidos! Estamos muy ansiosos por ir y reencontrarnos con los chicos nuevamente!

Hello! My name is Fion and I was Noel's partner. Staying in Argentina for those two weeks was really life changing and amazing. Visiting a foreign country is one thing, but actually living there and experiencing the life is a whole new memory. I've been to school with the exchange partners, toured Rafaela, had breakfast, lunch, and dinner with the family everyday, and done so many things that have really opened my eyes to the lives of other people. Life in Rafaela has many similarities and differences in comparison to life in Cerritos. There is so much more freedom and the large city leaves so much room for adventure and fun. In these short two weeks, all of us have been able to form a close bond with our exchange partners like we never thought would be possible. I really appreciated the hospitality and kindness of the exchange students and parents alike. They embraced us with open arms into their homes and treated us as if we were their own. The two weeks just flew by and by the time we were leaving, crying was inevitable. We arrived with mixed emotions of fear and anxiety and left with a homesickness that will always be in our hearts. I LOVE RAFAELA!
ReplyDeleteHi! This is Karen Cheng, and my Argentinian partners were Agostina Haspert and Fiorella Baronetti. This was an opportunity of a lifetime, and I am very glad that I took it. Argentina was a whole different world in some ways, and yet there were little things that were the same as here. Something that was pleasantly different was that nobody was a stranger there- as soon as you met them, they counted you as a friend. Something that didn't change- the teenagers there are just as devoted to facebook as we are. This was an experience that I will remember for the rest of my life. The families were amazing- they took me in as one of their own. I think almost everyone, if not everyone, cried when the time came to leave the family. We all developed close bonds with the Argentinians within those few days. I had no idea what to expect before the trip, but I would've never thought that it would be as amazing as it was. It's expanded my view of the world outside of Cerritos, California. I got a firsthand look of life in a different country. Argentina gave me more than I could've imagined-an experience that I'll always keep with me, an extended family, and a second home.
ReplyDeleteIt only took two weeks for me to be greatly impacted by a new group of people. Hi my name is Johanna Paz and I enjoyed the exchange program very much and it will be a great experience if future generations can make this trip as well because although it may be hard to believe it was life changing. The thing that I liked the most was that the people were very welcoming and the students took us into their family as if we’ve known each other for years ! That was great because it made me feel like part of the family and I think it is safe to say that I am part of the Actis family. It felt great to be surrounded by a new culture that is very warm compared to the people in the USA that only great with a “hi” or “hello” and the closest thing to a welcoming kiss is a handshake. Being away from home for two weeks also made me appreciate what I have back home because we Americans have a lot more commodities than people in Latin American countries. It was great seeing that their happiness did not come from video games, but from family and hanging out with their friends and being active in sports. Now that I have experienced a new culture in a foreign country it is fun to compare and contrast. When we visited the schools in Argentina all the students were very welcoming throwing millions of questions at us and crowding around us. They made sure that we didn’t feel like strangers. The fact that the Argentinians were so open and warm it not only made me feel welcomed, but it made me be more open as well. I hope that WHS students give them the same attention as the Argentinian students gave us. When I got home I had about 60 friend requests, and of course they were all from Rafaela. It is great that Facebook and skype exist so that we can keep communicating with our friends from Argentina. I promised myself that I will go back to Rafaela if it were the last thing I did. I met new people that are great and I know that when I go back I will have a family waiting for me with open doors. This is a once in a lifetime experience because it expands the view one has of their world. It is an experience that made many memories and will live on in my heart. Saying goodbye was definitely the hardest thing to do because we all grew so close in such a short amount of time, but I am waiting with open arms for the Argentinians to come to California !

Esa experiencia definitivamente cambió mi vida y mi forma de ver el mundo y contribuyó para que asumiera un compromiso renovado con mi crecimiento personal y profesional.

Hemos trabajado mucho para lograr que este sueño se haga realidad, pero lo hemos logrado. Nuestros alumnos se han convertido en verdaderos embajadores de su país, dignos representantes vivos de su cultura. Aprender el idioma, compartir actividades y ambientes les ha permitido destruir mitos, prejuicios y toda forma de discriminación para construir relaciones sociales y una cultura de paz. Este intercambio ha transformado y seguirá transformando sus vidas. Ver a los chicos argentinos y americanos despedirse fundidos en un solo abrazo, con lágrimas en los ojos fue un momento realmente conmovedor, y fue la prueba de que habíamos logrado nuestro objetivo. El grupo americano ha dejado huellas en todos nosotros. Taty y yo creemos que para nuestros chicos, los EEUU ya no es un país del norte, para cada uno de nosotros los EEUU son Fion, Karen, Carin, Sagar, Vince, Michelle, Javier, Griselda, María, Amrita, Marissa, Hannah, Dianna, y Johanna. Son nuestra familia.
30 years ago, still being a student, I had the opportunity of travelling to California to start an exchange program between a university in the States and the Argentine university where I was studying to become a teacher. That experience definitely changed my life and my view of the world, and helped me make a renewed commitment with my personal and professional growth.
Today, as an English Teacher, I have the possibility of being part of this wonderful project, longed for many years and built with passion and effort by these 3 public institutions. We have worked a lot to make this dream come true, but we’ve made it. Our students have become true ambassadors of their own countries, worthy and live representatives of their cultures. Learning the language, sharing activities and environments have made it possible for them to destroy myths, prejudices and any form of discrimination, and to build up social interrelations and a culture of peace. This exchange has transformed and will continue transforming their lives. Watching American and Argentine students saying goodbye at the bus station, melting into each other’s arms, with tears in their eyes, was a really touching moment, and proved that we had achieved our goal. The American group has left a trace in all of us. Taty and I believe that for our students, the USA is no longer a country in the North, for each of us the States are Fion, Karen, Carin, Sagar, Vince, Michelle, Javier, Griselda, María, Amrita, Marissa, Hannah, Dianna, and Johanna. They are family.
Mi nombre es Julián, tengo 17 años y voy a la Escuela Preparatoria de Inglés. Me encantó la experiencia de alojar a Sagar en mi casa y poder mostrarle mi familia, amigos, escuela y actividades, a él como al resto, en tan solo 10 días. Ésto fue más fácil ya que ellos vinieron con tanta predisposición y alegría que nos permitió enseguida sentirnos como amigos. El idioma no fue ningún problema. Tanta espera y tantos preparativos por fin llegaron.

Hola soy Florencia Seffino voy a la escuela Mario R. Vecchiolli y alojé a Dianna junto con Marianela Mendoza. La experiencia para mí fue una de las mejores que viví en mi vida, debido a que en tan poco tiempo pude llegar a conocer no solo a chicos con diferentes culturas y orígenes sino que me llegué a encariñar con muchos de ellos, también me permitió poder afianzar el idioma y conocerlo mejor. Estoy muy contenta y agradecida por tener esta gran oportunidad y no veo la hora de viajar para EE.UU y poder reencontrarme con todos Uds.

Hi, this is Marissa Fierro, and it's so hard to believe that I went to Argentina over a month ago. I was honestly really scared to arrive, because I had not talked to Flo and Jose that much beforehand, the two girls that I stayed with. But right when I got off the bus, they both came up to me and hugged me and gave me a kiss on the cheek-one of my favorite parts of the culture-as if we were already good friends. Over the ten days that I was there, I learned so much about the culture and beliefs of the girls that I stayed with and of their families. We had so much fun comparing customs here and in Rafaela. One thing that I especially loved was the relationships that I built with Flo's and Jose's families. Communication was hardly an issue because everyone was understanding of my lack of complete fluency in the language, and every night at dinner we would spend so much time sitting there after we ate, just talking about the most random things. Meeting their friends from school, and the other students that were part of the exchange, was so fun because they all greeted us so warmly, wanting to know the most obscure things about my life. I never felt awkward or uncomfortable even though I had never met any of these people before. Leaving was the absolute worst part. I dont think any of us expected to be so sad to leave, but I know that we all had tears in our eyes as we got onto the bus and left. I think this was one of the hardest goodbyes I've made, even though I only knew everyone for two weeks, which surprised me so much. But, seeing the families for the last time, seeing everyone hugging goodbye, and having to say goodbye to Flo and Jose was so hard. The only thing that kept us happy was the thought that we'd be seeing them again at the end of the summer. So, I cannot wait until the 28th, when I can show them how I live and what this area is like.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I can talk about what I did there, what I learned about the culture, and the people I met, but none of it would do the experience justice. The exchange was truly a once in a lifetime opportunity, and I would do it again in a second. I definitely want to go back to Argentina, and I know I will stay friends with the people I met there throughout my life. I grew to appreciate life here a lot more, but also to take notice of the simpler ways of life which most people have in Rafaela, which I actually like a lot more. I hope that other students in the future get to take part in the same exchange program, because it is so amazing. :)

Lo que me gusto de este intercambio ?? mmm TODO , ya que nosotros tuvimos la oportunidad de enseñarles sobre algunas de nuestras costumbres, ya que los chico estaban dispuestos a aprender. Realizamos diferentes actividades en las cuales participamos todos, junto con los profesores. La verdad muy linda la experiencia, y ahora esperando a que llegue el momento de reencontarnos nuevamente!!! saludos a todosss, good bye, nos veremos pronto! =)

ReplyDeleteMe gustaría destacar lo importante que fue para mi este intercambio y los momentos tan lindos que viví, fue una experiencia increíble que la verdad jamas pensé que me hiba a pasar. Todos los chicos norteamericanos se portaron muy bien y se integraron rápidamente al grupo lo cual me sorprendió porque pensé que hiba a ser un poco mas difícil, estoy muy contenta de que la hallan pasado genial como nos dijeron. En el momento en que se fueron me causo un poco de tristeza y alegría a la ves, tristeza por que se hiban y no los hiba a ver en mucho tiempo y por supuesto los hiba a extrañar, ya me había acostumbrado a su presencia. Y alegría a la vez porque estaba muy cerca de ir para allá y al ver ese colectivo tenia muchas ganas de irme con ellos. Estoy muy agradecida por hacerme parte de este proyecto sobre todo a las profesoras que pusieron todas sus ganas y compromiso en esto y gracias a dios salio todo bien.
Estoy contando los días para ir a los Estados Unidos pienso que la voy a pasar genial!! un beso grande a todos y saludos!!
Hola, soy Micaela Thimelthaler, en cuanto a mi experiencia creo que fue muy buena, es inexplicable lo que se siente al estar con ellos, y la inmensa felicidad que ocaciona ser parte de un intercambio así. Las personas que lo componen, tanto profesores como alumnos estadounidenses y argentinos son excelentes personas dispuestas a ayudarnos a cumplir este sueño de conocer otra parte del mundo. Mi familia disfrutó mucho la presencia de Carin, es una muy buena chica y siempre estuvo dispuesta a conocer todo lo que hacía refenrencia a nuestras vidas, actividades, comidas, y muchas cosas que fueron muy especiales al haberlas podido compartir con ella y con todos los demás chicos. ReplyDeleteWhen I arrived in Rafaela, Argentina at 4AM after a long flight and bus ride, I wasn't sure what to expect from the next two weeks and was actually quite nervous. I mean, studying Spanish for two years gives you enough knowledge to make general conversation, but enough to actually connect and befriend people? Not sure about that. Luckily, it was. In the beginning, pointing and exaggerated hand motions were key to survival but soon I became more comfortable with my limited Spanish and was able to talk more or less normally with my new Argentinian (or is it Argentine?) buddies even though half the time I had absolutely no idea what was going on. I also had the very fortunate privilege to learn how to play the game of Truco, a complicated, popular card game in Argentina, and soon gained a mini-reputation of being a good, or just plain lucky, player (and liar ;D). Watching Phineas and Ferb in Spanish was also quite an experience in itself. I loved the laid-back atmosphere in Rafaela, strikingly different from the busy city at home. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE in Rafaela seemed so excited and happy to see us, it was like the relationship between Justin Bieber and his millions of fan girls. All of us began to receive Facebook request after request as we assimilated into this strange, new, but comfortable environment. I really enjoyed experiencing the different customs of Argentina, especially the greetings. Where else in the world do people exchange kisses on the cheek when they first meet other people? It was startling, but amazing. And of course, the whole country was crazy about soccer! Yay!
This was truly a wonderful experience despite the freezing cold temperatures in the month of June(!) and the enormous amount of weight I put on thanks to all of the delicious Argentine delicacies (world's best churros!). I made new friends, discovered new places, was on Rafaela TV - the list goes on and on. I am so thankful to have been able to participate in such a trip and look forward to traveling/studying abroad again one day.
